“You’ve got a wonderful corner of heaven here. It does good things for the soul! Can’t wait to come back. X” Kathryn & Jim Smyllie.
Hibou was originally the hayloft for the stables below. Nowadays though, it’s been renovated to provide a high-level of comfort and practicality for our guests. Named after the family of owls who’ve lived here in peace for years, Hibou sets the standard for what we have in mind for Le Chant d’Oiseau. We’re proud of what we’ve created here.

Climbing the outside staircase so much a part of French farm buildings leads you through the pretty archway of forsythia and up into what was once an important part of Le Chant d’Oiseau farm life – the hayloft.
The entance door opens onto a massive lounge come kitchen/diner area, and is light and airy. The traditional beams combine with the modern look to give a sense of space, heightened by the peaceful views across open countryside to the rear. To the front, the pretty dormer window opens to reveal a flower-filled courtyard in spring and summer.
Hibou, like Héron, is a family gite consisting of two large bedrooms, a separate shower room/wc and a huge lounge/diner. A private garden area has been created to the side of this delightful holiday home where you can lounge on the recliners, glass of chilled local wine in one hand, and a good book in the other, while you relax in the sun. A stone-built BBQ provides the focal point for lazy evenings in the summer sunshine. All outdoor furniture is provided, including table, chairs, loungers and cushions etc.
“Had a wonderful fortnight staying at Le Chant d’Oiseau. Stu & Syb very welcoming and knowledgeable of local area. Excellent and companiable meals and fouée! Bracken very helpful with midge bites! Enjoyed chatting to Sheila. Yours,” Hilary & Michael Elwood, with Stephen and Laura
The bespoke kitchen is a combination of both modern look and feel, with some traditional fittings and appliances. We’ve reclaimed some materials from nearby villages, as well as from around Le Chant d’Oiseau and placed them here, where we think they’ll be appreciated! Hopefully, everything you need is here, but if we’ve forgotten anything, just ask!
All lets of a week or more include our welcome pack of fresh local goodies, including a chilled carafe of wine to enjoy upon your arrival!
The light and airy double room is both large and cosy at the same time! We’ve added a further single bed in the second bedroom, so it now sleeps three children (or adults!) and there’s still acres of space to spread out toys and games too!
If you’re a couple, looking to holiday with friends, rather than kids, get in touch to see how we can offer Hibou to you as an inexpensive holiday destination.
Although there’s no bath in Hibou, we doubt you’ll miss it when there’s a luxurious shower to be had! Especially with the glorious view over open countryside to the rear of Le Chant d’Oiseau. The pretty garden to the side of Hibou gives more than enough space to enjoy your sunbathing on the loungers in privacy, while dad takes over the cooking duties on the BBQ! Watch the buzzards soaring high overhead, swooping now and then to catch their prey. Because Le Chant is surrounded by unspoilt countryside, we often have deer visit us, sometimes passing very close to the fence. The landing of the staircase is a superb vantage point to see the deer in the fields. Sometimes boar pass by, though they’re usually quite shy. Go quietly at dusk too, and perhaps you’ll see the barn owls emerge from the openings above you and fly across the fields behind to hunt to feed their young!
“What a wonderful, sociable place – thanks for the lovely meals, fantastic hospitality and a wonderful campsite & gite. We had a great time!” The Nuttall family
Note. As with all our gites, we supply all cleaning materials, as well as some toilet rolls to get you started etc. We ask that the gites are left clean at the end of your stay, but we don’t expect you to spend your last day preparing it for the next guests, that’s our job!
“The peace & quiet. The countryside. The gite. Stu & Syb. Bracken. The food. The wine. FAB!!!” Ron & Lynda Wilkinson
